Do I Need Teeth Extracted for Braces?

The first step in determining whether you or a loved one may need teeth extracted before the commencement of your orthodontic treatment is a consultation with Dr. Meason. While most patients do not need any teeth extracted for braces, occasionally we do recommend extracting teeth for various reasons, such as a stubborn baby tooth, crowding, or bite correction.

When Extraction May Be Necessary

Severe crowding is by far the most common reason for extracting teeth. Extracting one or more teeth may be needed to get all of your teeth to fit. Alternatively, a tooth extraction, in conjunction with rubber bands, can sometimes prevent invasive jaw surgery for severe bite misalignments. And occasionally a baby tooth does not come out on its own and blocks the development of the underlying adult tooth. However, we may be able to begin orthodontic treatment with baby teeth present, depending on the patient’s age.

How Long Does It Take to Recover After a Tooth Extraction?

After your tooth extraction, you will be provided with important instructions that will aid in your recovery. The best way to ensure you have a smooth recovery is to: follow any instructions you’re given; eat soft foods like purees, yogurt, smoothies, and scrambled eggs; avoid straws and tobacco products; drink plenty of water; and get plenty of rest. And as always, maintain a superb oral hygiene routine by brushing twice a day for two minutes each time and flossing daily.
