When Is the Best Age to Start Orthodontic Treatment?
June 29, 2023 7:35 pmOne of the most common questions we get is if there is an ideal age to begin orthodontic treatment. Here are a few things to consider as you take the next steps toward a straighter, healthier smile for you or your child.
Braces for Kids
We recommend scheduling a preliminary orthodontic evaluation for your child around age 7, if possible. By this age, your child’s permanent teeth will have started to grow in and their jaw is closer to its adult size. This early evaluation gives us an opportunity to note any potential orthodontic problems that may arise, like crowded teeth or a misaligned bite, so you can plan ahead and budget for orthodontic treatment. Your child may also benefit from early orthodontic intervention.
However, there is no specific age that is best for kids to get braces. It all depends on their unique case so we make suggestions on a patient-by-patient basis. Our team will provide the best guidance we can based on your child’s unique circumstances! We may recommend early interceptive treatment for some children to prevent or reduce issues, and for other children it may be beneficial to wait a few more years before getting braces.
Braces for Adults
Adults of all ages can consider orthodontic treatment these days. It’s never too late to achieve the smile of your dreams! We understand that adults may feel more self-conscious about having brackets and wires on their teeth. At Meason Orthodontics, we offer clear aligner options like Invisalign and our in-house aligners so you can straighten your teeth more discreetly compared to braces.
