How Are Braces Removed?

September 30, 2021 1:23 am

Traditional metal braces are one of the most common and effective orthodontic treatments available. Braces can take anywhere from several months to a few years to finish straightening the teeth and adjusting the bite. After the desired results are achieved, a trained dentist or orthodontist will gently remove the brackets and wires. Here’s what you need to know about the removal process!

Pre-Removal Braces Preparation

After the treatment is complete, your dentist or orthodontist will start the removal process. Before your appointment, your dentist will typically recommend that you take an over-the-counter pain reliever to minimize any sensitivity and discomfort after your appointment.

The Removal Process for Braces

Once the removal process begins, your dentist will use a special dental tool to snip the wires and remove them. Then, they will gently pop the brackets off of the teeth. After the braces are removed, they will gently sand off the residual glue off the teeth. Once all the glue is cleaned off the teeth, your dentist will begin a thorough deep cleaning to take care of any plaque and tartar buildup. Because brackets and wires can make it more difficult to properly brush and floss, it’s not uncommon for patients to have plaque and tartar buildup after orthodontic treatment.

Does Removing Braces Hurt?

Removing braces can cause some discomfort and sensitivity. However, it’s nothing to stress over! Your dentist will recommend an over-the-counter pain medication or prescribe an anti-inflammatory to help minimize any discomfort you may experience after the appointment. If you have any prolonged pain after your braces are removed, please contact your dentist.
