Orthodontics & Sports: Protect Your Braces or InvisalignSeptember 21, 2023 9:00 am
Playing sports is a great way for kids to burn off extra energy, stay healthy and fit, and make friends. If your child is undergoing orthodontic treatment while participating in an athletic activity, it’s important to take some extra precautions to keep their teeth and mouth safe from damage. While orthodontics and sports can go hand in hand, if your child wears braces or Invisalign, it’s wise to safeguard their smile during athletic activities.
Wear a Mouthguard
The best way to prevent damage to your child’s smile while playing sports is to invest in a custom athletic mouthguard. Made of durable plastic, the mouthguard can be designed to fit over braces to serve as a barrier between the metal brackets and the soft tissues of the mouth.
If your child has Invisalign, we recommend taking the aligner trays out and replacing them with an athletic mouthguard while playing sports. Just be sure to keep the Invisalign trays in a safe place and put them back in right after the game to achieve your desired orthodontic results on schedule.
Orthodontics and sports can certainly coincide, but certain athletic activities are riskier than others when it comes to potential dental injuries. Sports like football or soccer, for instance, involve direct physical contact and impact with other players or the ground. Consider switching to a lower-impact sport, like swimming or track and field, during orthodontic treatment to reduce the chances of sustaining an injury to the face or mouth.
