Tips for Keeping Your Orthodontic Treatment Plan on Track
May 28, 2023 3:52 amFollow these tips during your orthodontic treatment to transform your misaligned, crooked smile into a straight, even one as quickly and painlessly as possible:
- Maintain Good Oral Hygiene
- Watch Your Diet with Braces
- Wear Your Clear Aligners as Instructed
- Keep Up with Your Orthodontic Appointments & Dental Checkups
Whether you’re wearing traditional braces or clear aligners, good oral hygiene is critical! If you neglect your oral hygiene, you may end up with issues like white and yellow discolorations on your teeth, tooth decay, and gum disease.
You can eat what you want with clear aligners since they are removed at mealtime, but there are certain foods you should avoid when wearing braces. For example, foods that are hard, sticky, or chewy (such as caramel, gum, some breads and nuts, raw vegetables, and candy) can get stuck in your braces and damage them. It’s best to wait until treatment is over before adding these foods back into your diet.
Metal braces are bonded to your teeth for the duration of your treatment, but clear aligners are removable. This makes things like eating, brushing, and flossing much easier. However, don’t forget to put the aligners back in your mouth! Clear aligners should be worn around 20-22 hours a day. Keep them in a safe place when they aren’t in your mouth.
Routine orthodontic checkups are important during your treatment. If you’re wearing metal braces, we will make regular adjustments to ensure your teeth continue moving where we want them to go. While you’ll need fewer appointments if you’re wearing clear aligners, we still need to see you regularly during the process. You should also keep up with routine dental cleanings at your general dentist.
